Beyond the Tracks: Other Things Worth Doing Near the Redwood Valley Railway

The steam train tends to be the headline reason people drive up to Tilden Regional Park, but honestly, it’s almost a shame to treat it as a one-stop visit. The park around the railway has enough going on that you could easily turn a quick train ride into a half-day outing without much extra planning.

Right near the railway, there’s a vintage carousel that’s been there for decades — hand-carved animals, old-school mechanical charm, the kind of thing that feels like stepping back in time a little. It’s a natural add-on stop since it’s practically walking distance from the train platform, and kids who just got off the steam train rarely want to leave the area yet anyway.

Slow Down a Little

A bit further in, the Tilden Nature Area and the botanic garden are worth the short walk if anyone in your group likes being outdoors without a strict itinerary. The botanic garden in particular is quiet, well-kept, and a nice contrast to the energy of the train ride — good for anyone in the group who wants a slower pace for twenty minutes.

If it’s warm out, Lake Anza is the other local favorite — a small swimming area that gets busy on hot weekends but is genuinely pleasant for cooling off after walking around the park. Just worth knowing it has its own seasonal hours, so it’s not guaranteed to be open every time you visit — similar to how the railway itself runs on a seasonal schedule, so it’s worth planning your trip around the best time of year to visit.

None of this requires much extra planning — it’s really just a matter of not rushing straight back to the car after the train ride ends. Tilden Park rewards people who linger a little, and the railway is honestly a great excuse to discover the rest of it.
